The island of Vlieland

Vlieland is smallest island of the Frisian Wadden islands group. The crossing from Harlingen to Oost- Vlieland by ferry will take you approximately 1.5 hours. The rapid ferry service only takes about 45 minutes. Cars are not permitted on Vlieland (except for islanders). The island has a good bus and taxi service. Book your ferryticket in time at Rederij Doeksen.

Vlieland in numbers
Vlieland has a population of about 1100. It has about 250 private holiday homes in the dunes and about 200 in the village. The harbour can accommodate 300 vessels. There are 2 camp-sites.

Vlieland and its environs
The Wadden islands of Texel and Terschelling lie respectively to the west and to the east of Vlieland. While to the north is the North Sea and the Wadden sea lies to the south. The Wadden Sea is the largest tidal area in the World and is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Vlieland and its weather
As with the rest of the Wadden islands, Vlieland sees on average more sun hours than the rest of the Netherlands. The almost always ever-present wind scatters the clouds quicker than in the rest of the country. The island climate has soft summers and a long autumn.

More arrangements

Once you have found your accommodation, then you can start getting some arrangements out of the way, like the crossing, as well as renting the linens and/or some bikes. To Vlieland
The ferry departing from the Frisian town of Harlingen will take you to the Wadden island of Vlieland. You can either sail with Rederij Doeksen. The crossing takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Arrival on Vlieland
The ferry docks in the village of Oost-Vlieland. There are busses and taxis on hand in the square to take you to your destination. It is also possible to rent a bike here. The luggage transport delivers your luggage to your accommodation allowing you to continue your journey by bike.

To your accommodation on Vlieland
The tourist (VVV) information office is located on the ferry causeway and has all the information about Vlieland that you could possibly need. Vlieland is not a large island. It is possible to get to your accommodation either by walking or cycling and takes between 30-45 minutes. Of course, there is also the option to go by bus or taxi.
