`Windstil` by Trio De Mast
Music at the intersection of
classical, jazz and world music (including Arabic,
Indian).
`Different from what the title suggests, `Windstil` is
an incredibly lively album. It is an album by someone who has audibly
immersed himself in quite a few musical styles during his musical
career; organically, Indian music, French impressionism, soul grooves,
pop, Bach and blues are blended with the lyrical language so
characteristic of Pieter de Mast`s (saxophone/flute) compositions and
improvisations. It seems that, following the albums of the Windstreken
ensemble, this smaller ensemble with Modar Salama (percussion) and
Sebastiaan van Delft (piano/organ/harmonium) adds to the poetic
eloquence. A windless harbour, where all the impressions of a musical
voyage of discovery find their place and which one wants to listen to
again and again.`
(Thus Leonard Evers, composer and
conductor)
About the musicians:
The trio of Pieter de Mast -
Leiden saxophonist/flute player and composer - brings a lyrical mix of
jazz, classical and oriental influences. His subdued, rhythmically
surprising music sounds best when played together with Sebastiaan van
Delft (piano/organ) and Modar Salama (percussion). Their new album
Windstil was released in 2024.
De Mast has performed at major
festivals, in various theatre productions and has led the ensemble
Windstreken for many years. As an organist and pianist, Van Delft
moves effortlessly between classical and jazz, while Salama - trained
in Damascus - excels in oriental percussion and has collaborated with
a variety of top ensembles.
