`About Adriana Basile` by Al Canto de las Olas
With the
programme `About Adriana Basile`, ensemble Al canto de las Olas
(baroque harp, theorbo/baroque guitar and soprano) brings this
fascinating artist back to life. Adriana Basile was a singer and harp/
guitarist from Naples in the 17th century. She was a superstar in
Italy at the time, working at the court of Mantua and travelling
around performing in other Italian cities.
Many poems and letters
were written for her. In this programme, follow her journey with music
by composers she worked with, reconstructed music from her Neapolitan
songbook and read the texts written for her.
The concert connects Spanish and Italian music from the 17th
century. The programme thus interweaves unknown gems with famous texts
from the Spanish Golden Age, by Vicente Espinel and others. It also
features music by composers Adriana knew personally or with whom she
collaborated, such as Claudio Monteverdi and Sigismondo
d`India.
Al Canto de las Olas thus gives voice to two
exceptional women, Adriana Basile and her daughter Leonora Baroni
(herself a celebrated singer and theorbist) from the early Baroque
period, and allows their stories to be heard in a way that is both
historically rich and poignantly personal. A programme that comes
perfectly into its own in the atmospheric Nicolaaskerk.
About
the musicians:
Al Canto de las Olas is an international Baroque ensemble
dedicated to rediscovering unknown gems from the 17th century. The
line-up - soprano (Gaia Aleli Szames), baroque harp (Emma Huijsser)
and theorbo and baroque guitar (Francesco Zoccali) - creates an
intimate, colourful sound world in which the voices of forgotten
composers, poets and historical figures are brought back to
life.
With their refined playing, theatrical eloquence and love of
storytelling, the musicians of Al Canto de las Olas will bring you
