Stravinsky`s The Firebird, by Mattias Spee
Pianist Mattias
Spee brings one of the most enchanting orchestral works in music
history in a rare to hear guise: the breathtaking solo piano
arrangement of Stravinsky`s The Firebird.
Where we know The
Firebird as a colourful ballet with a lush orchestra, this virtuoso
piano version reveals a new spectrum of clarity and intensity. The
different musical layers - which in the orchestra sometimes melt away
into the whole - gain a new sharpness and transparency on the piano.
The result is a performance that is not only as powerful as the
original, but sometimes even more spectacular, thanks to the
unprecedented finger acrobatics that Stravinsky`s music demands
here.
Mattias Spee, known for his expressive playing, decisive
technique and adventurous programming, demonstrates how this
masterpiece takes on a magic of its own in its solo form. In the
special acoustics of the Nicolaaskerk and on the concert grand piano
that Mattias now knows well, The Firebird comes alive with sparkling
energy, deep colours and an almost tangible tension.
This is a
unique opportunity to experience a much-loved classic in a guise
rarely performed live. A fiery, virtuoso evening guaranteed to
linger.
About the musician:
Mattias Spee is a Dutch pianist,
composer and improviser with a distinct musical versatility. Trained
at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music with David Kuyken and Ralph van
Raat, he combines his classical background with a great passion for
contemporary music, improvisation, jazz and minimalism. He is also a
true musical `schatgraver`: Spee brings forgotten or underrated
repertoire back to life in his own series of albums Eclipse. His piano
playing is praised for a `velvet touch` and highly personal
interpretations.
