Vlieland is home to a special nature reserve, the Kroonspolders.
This nature reserve is located on the west side of Vlieland and borders the Wadden Sea.
The Kroonspolders are close to the Posthuys and you can easily cycle there via the Postweg.
The area was created at the beginning of the last century by the construction of a number of shifting dykes.
Former overseer Kroon wanted to create an area on Vlieland where agriculture would be possible.
However, the area proved unsuitable for agriculture and today the Kroonspolders are a unique nature reserve.
However, Kroon's name has remained attached to these polders.
Most of Vlieland is freely accessible, but the Kroonspolders are now a protected area.
What makes these Kroonspolders on Vlieland so special are the transitions from a saline to a fresh environment.
The inner polder is mainly fed by fresh water and therefore has a very different vegetation structure than the outer polder bordering the Wadden Sea.
For example, rare orchids grow there (here is a picture of sea lavender).
Vlieland is a real bird island and the Kroonspolders are home to cormorants and spoonbills, among others.
If you would like to visit the Kroonpolders on Vlieland, you can do so on a guided excursion.
If you would like to take an excursion through the Kroonspolders, you can register at Information Centre de Noordwester.
It is also possible to walk freely along the dike that lies to the east of the Kroonspolders, from where you have a view of the various polders.
A handy tip: bring binoculars!
